About the piece
I came up with the idea for writing this piece after being mesmerized watching a small shallow bubbling stream wind its way down through a wood. The piano part depicts the babbling, running water as it makes its way along its journey.
The performance should be lively with a constant feeling of moving forward. There is an optional viola part that can be played if there is no violin 3. The repeat of the opening section is quite long. It’s optional but if it can be done then that’s preferable. I didn’t want to make the piece too long by adding lots of different sections and notes. I felt it was more important to have less music and notes to learn and be able to get the piece up to tempo, to create that ‘babbling brook’ feel.
The string parts can be played with the recorded piano part as the piano plays constantly and has a good moving part that would help keep everyone together.
‘The Brook’ is in G major and has been written technically with real beginners in mind and that is why I have categorized it as easy. It would be more on the moderate side of easy as the Violin 1 and 2 players have string crossings at the beginning but they still need to keep the tempo moving.
