ABOUT ME

catherine howe

The sheet music available to buy here at The Little Music Bazaar is written and arranged by me, Catherine Howe. I’m a professional musician, a violin and viola player. Born in 1966 in Newcastle upon Tyne, I grew up in Northumberland and began piano lessons at the age of four, violin lessons at nine and I picked up the viola at sixteen.

Before leaving for London in 1984 to study violin and viola at the Royal College of Music, I played with many local groups, most significantly the Northumberland Youth Orchestra and the Northern Junior Philharmonic Orchestra, eventually becoming leader of both. I also spent a couple of years as a violinist with the National Youth Orchestra.

I studied at the Royal College of Music for five years and immediately began to work professionally as a viola player. Since then I’ve had full time orchestral jobs, worked as a freelancer with many of the top orchestras and ensembles in the country and toured all over the world. I’ve been incredibly lucky to have had a brilliant career and while my musical life is much quieter these days due in part to becoming a mother, fantastic playing opportunities as a violin and viola player still continue to pop up now and again.

Being a parent of two musical children and working as a piano and string teacher for pupils of all ages, I have gained an insight into the problems finding good ensemble music for beginner string players. I’ve had works published in the past and I do have quite a creative mind and this has spurred me on to write and arrange music for beginner string ensembles and to sell my music on this site. I very much hope you enjoy playing it.
